COOL STREAMAPR-JUN 2024
Industrial Design Engineering Part  2, the continuation of HandyTap.

Introducing COOL STREAM, designed to apply, cool, and dry topical treatments to overcome the difficult complications around eczema medication application.

As the Creative Lead, I handled all aspects of product and aesthetics development, from designing and modelling outer ergonomics and internal systems, to filming and editing the final product video.

01. BACKGROUND & Features ideation

Building on from the research conducted in Part 1, major user pain points were identified to shape the development of essential features:

Painful Application
 Prolonged Drying Process
Excess Dispensed Product

Part 2 began at a convergence point, analysing each member’s previous final designs. After extensive consultations with patients and dermatologists, main functions were decided to maximise benefits throughout the entire process, from pre- to post-treatment application.

02. features refinement

Corresponding to identified pain points, we decided to incorporate a bladeless fan, cream dispenser, and a pressure sensitive plate as part of the final device. This led us to begin a refinement process focused on user-centered design, prototyping variations of each feature and conducting further user testing to determine the best ergonomics for optimised experience.

The Fan

Key considerations: Sound, Speed, Power

By reducing number of blades and increasing  blade curvature, drag and noise were minimised hence optimising airflow power.

The Dispenser

First prototype: resettable ratchet gear

Final prototype: translation bevel gear mechanism

03. Product Modelling  &  assembly

Development of product mechanism and sub assemblies through CAD and further iteration testing.
Incorporating electronics housing, dispensing / gear mechanism and cream container into a device, making it as compact as possible.
Factoring design for manufacture and assembly considerations, outer shell is designed with self locating and snap fit features to optimise product build efficiency.

Internal housing refinement following gear, bearing and outer ergonomics modifications
